Will the Toba MEMU-7 models of digital boat gauges work with my original gauge senders/sensors?
Yes, the MEMU-7i and ix models were specifically designed to be a universal fit for any engine, they will suit your existing sensors in almost every instance.
Where there is an unusual issue, a reasonably priced sensor can be purchased locally or from our website to ensure the unit works very well.
What is the difference between the MEMU-7i and ix models?
The MEMU-7ix features additional capability on the MEMU-7i in that it has an additional communications port which allows for connection to NMEA2000 and J1939 protocols.
Via this port the unit can receive and transmit engine data. If connected to an engine with electronic control, the unit can retrieve and display engine data known and held by the engine’s ECU.
The MEMU-7ix can also be connected to a mechanical engine, obtain its engine data via an analogue pathway, then broadcast the data via the comms port to a third-party network or platform.
Can I connect the unit to NMEA2000 or J1939?
The MEMU-7ix model will connect to NMEA2000 and J1939 to either receive engine data and display it or, broadcast the engine data collected by the unit. Both can be done at the same time.
The MEMU-7i model does not have this capability though it does have the capability to share its data with another Toba device over ‘Toba Comms’
What if I have a fuel injected engine, can I still use your digital gauges unit?
Yes, in fact there are a couple of ways to do that. The MEMU-7i unit can be used where the engine either has or can be fitted with standard sensors to get the information you seek such as temperature, oil pressure etc.
If, however, you have an electronically controlled engine and a NMEA2000 gateway, you can simply connect the unit using that method to get the required engine data. To do this you would need to purchase the MEMU-7ix model, as this model has the capability to connect to a third party comms protocol.
Can I use a Toba MEMU-7 models with an outboard engine?
Yes, in fact the MEMU-7i can be connected to an outboard, where some do not have oil pressure sensors, one can be added at low cost and monitored.
If, however, it is an electronic outboard, you can simply utilise the MEMU-7ix model and using a NMEA2000 gateway connect the engine to get the engine data you seek directly from the engine’s ECU.
Can I use the Toba MEMU-7 models with big diesels?
Yes, the MEMU-7i will connect and use almost any sensor used by older mechanical engines without issue, or any sensor can be replaced to ensure operation.
If the diesel engine is an electronically controlled engine, the MEMU-7ix can be connected to the J1939 comms port to obtain similar engine data. The tacho input from most diesels is a waveform generated by the tacho sensors or alternator. In almost all cases the MEMU-7i or ix models will process that signal without issue.
Is the Toba MEMU-7 range waterproof?
Yes, though it is not formally rated at this stage, the MEMU-7i and ix models are designed specifically to withstand water splash, and spray from the rigors of outdoor use in a marine environment.
It is,however, not designed to be submerged. The unit is also supplied with a dashboard seal so that water cannot leak past the unit when flush mounted into a dashboard.
Are the Toba MEMU-7 models dimmable for night use?
Yes, the units both have a day/night mode with inverted black/white colouring for ease of viewing in different lighting conditions.
Can the MEMU-7i and ix units gauges be changed to suit my needs custom needs?
Any sensor which delivers a voltage, resistance or pulsed signal can be processed by these units.
Every gauge can be configured and calibrated to be whatever the user wishes, take a signal from whichever input they wish and read how they wish.
The MEMU-7 models were designed to be truly universal and suit as many applications as possible allowing for fitment into any craft.
Can the MEMU-7i display two different battery volts? Can it be set up as a voltmeter to display the coltage of a second battery bank (i.e. engine volts and house volts)?
Yes, absolutely. Each gauge can be configured to whatever you want to show and measure.
Can the MEMU-7i and ix units display/record engine hours?
Yes, we have included engine hours, trip hours and maintenance hours so that you can easily track your usage and maintenance routine.
Do I need an installer to fit and calibrate the unit?
Not always. Many DIY boaters have the skills to fit this unit similarly to, as an example, a stereo unit, the wiring is not particularly difficult.
We provide good step by step instructions and supporting information so that a handy DIY boater can fit the unit, then calibrate it.
At times, the sensors on your boat may not have known value ranges which mean that they need to be tested for resistance however, at worst case another sensor can always be fitted with known values, such as the ones we carry on our website.
Are there any engines which the unit will absolutely not work on?
No, all engines can be fitted with sensors that will work if the need arises.
Can I set the gauge alarms to suit my boat?
Yes, each alarmable gauge has an upper and lower configurable alarm trigger point aside from Battery voltage and Fuel level, which only have low-level alarms.
By setting a value in those “High” and “Low” alarm settings, the unit will go into alarm mode for that gauge and only that gauge when the value condition is met.
The gauge that goes into alarm mode glows red to offer a visual alert as well as triggering the audible alarm which is supplied with the unit. We recommend getting advice from your serviceman on where to set the alarms if you are not proficient in this area.
The alarming feature is a very good tool to ensure that your engine never gets to the stage of being damaged if something goes wrong, potentially saving you thousands in repair costs.
Will an alarm still work for a gauge/input that is not on the main screen?
Yes, for any gauge being measured that is alarmable, the alarm will sound when the preset conditions are met, and a message will appear if the gauge alarming is on another screen
